Despite the size of the wine, this iconic Howell Mountain Merlot never loses the plot. It is silken and deep and structured with terrific lift and firm tannin structure.

About This Wine
Vineyard

The 2021 vintage on Howell Mountain featured low yields and tiny clusters of deeply colored fruit. Shortly after fermentation finished, our lots of 2021 Merlot displayed power and souplesse in equal measure, even after an extended stay on the skins.

The nose contains the classic Howell Mountain signature of crushed red volcanic stones and wild, dark thorny vine fruit. On the palate the wine is expansive, seamless, and round featuring the same, dark wild berry fruit as the nose along with graphite, cocoa powder, and anise.

Block 4 on our Candlestick Ridge Vineyard extends steeply downward toward the east like a tongue off the main site. There’s something about this steep, shy bearing block that produces wines with tremendous sense of site and great structural integrity. Once again, our production is less than 250 cases for one of California’s most exquisite Bordeaux blends.

CANDLESTICK RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARD, HOWELL MOUNTAIN
Situated on the north end of the Howell Mountain summit cap at 2,250’ of elevation, this 26-acre vineyard, first planted in 1950, rests on a plateau overlooking the southeast face of Mount St Helena and the whole of Pope Valley. Replanted by Duckhorn Winery in 1998 to primarily Bordeaux varieties on varying rootstocks, the Candlestick Vineyard produces wines that are dense, dark and explosive with flavor. The pure white volcanic ash and Tufa soils are poor and well drained leading to low yields and intensely flavored berries.

The nine-acre Winery Estate Vineyard continues to demand constant attention – with huge variation in soils and microclimates. The yields are on average a meager 1.8 tons to the acre, but the fruit possesses a rare power and expression of site. Soils are especially shallow, even for Howell Mountain, and the vines must work through the rocky soils to seek moisture.
