2022 Gap's Crown Vineyard Chardonnay

SPRING RELEASE

We are surprised at how much NERVE the 2022 wine is showing in comparison to the more supple 2021 and 2020 vintage Chardonnays that we produced. Jason, Yordanos, and Carley labored meticulously over the precious few gallons that we were able to produce of this unique white wine.

The 2022 harvest was marked by heat spikes late in the season. For North Coast growers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (Russian River, Carneros, Sonoma Coast, Mendocino) 2022 was an excellent year. Moderate temperatures followed a cold, wet winter that resulted in a later bud break and fruit set. The wet weather early provided healthy canopies to shield the fruit from warmer temperatures as the season progressed.

As always, it has been a worthy companion with Tomales Bay Oysters from Scala Osteria here in Napa (you need to go here), but it also beat out some Grand Cru grower Champagne with our Osetra Caviar blowout during our recent Valentines dinner (reach out to Scott to get in the mix for this next year). If you’re a Caviar fan, this wine will make it a star.

GAP'S CROWN VINEYARD, SONOMA MOUNTAIN
Gap’s Crown Vineyard is owned by Bill Price. Situated on the southern end of Sonoma Mountain on the west side, the 138-acre hillside vineyard has extremely stony soils and low yields. Known as “The Petaluma Gap,” this area is a fog and breeze pocket that is unique in the Sonoma Coast. Cool temperatures, low pH values and high natural acidity produce wines of truly stunning vibrancy.

The 2022 features orange blossom, stone fruit, and smooth stream pebble aromatics and flavors that define the vineyard year after year. The raciness and minerality play on the mid palate while still offering smooth texture and a seamless finish. Our Gap’s Crown Chardonnay has become tough to come by, and the 2022 is even more dear than normal. Don’t wait or you will miss it.
