2021 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Despite the size and the towering tannin structure, our Howell Mountain Cabernet retains its nerve, energy and lift. If Bordeaux had mountains composed of volcanic soils, that is. Enjoy this rarity with a good decant at a cool temperature or let it sleep peacefully for as long as you can wait in the cellar. Upon release, the vibrant, primary mass of dark fruits in the nose and mouth have pulled back to reveal the class and nuance that make this wine one of the Napa Valley’s very best reds each year. Crushed red rocks, dark thorny vine fruits, cassis and mountain wildflowers all pour from the glass.

2021 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
AMENTET ESTATE VINEYARD
2021 was another low yield vintage for our Amentet Vineyard, but not as crazy low as our sister vineyards on Howell Mountain. The balanced vines at 1700’ have produced a Cabernet that is traditional in the best way. Our Mount Veeder 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon features dark floral tones, graphite, conifer forest floor and explosive dark cassis fruit in its core. The wine is such a child of Mount Veeder that it’s hard to miss in a blind tasting. Enjoy this seminal wine as it begins to show its dimensions. Like the Howell Mountain 2021 Cabernet, an hour decant is recommended if enjoying it a few weeks after arrival.

2021 Howell Mountain Zinfandel
BLACK SEARS VINEYARD
Our 2021 Black Sears Vineyard Zinfandel is a beguiling wine of impeccable balance, power and length. The short crop in a drought year means that the white pepper and red, volcanic stone accents are woven deeply into the exotic, dark fruit. Our 2021 Black Sears Zinfandel displays loads of terroir maybe more-so than any other wine in the vintage. As with our Côte de Craig, this Zinfandel is incredibly versatile with food. It sings with grilled fish, grilled meat, pasta, cheeses, burgers and pizza.

CANDLESTICK RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARD
The 2021 vintage was the smallest on record for either of our Howell Mountain vineyards as vines struggled to recover from drought and fire, and the few bunches on the vines were thinned even further by windy, cold weather at flower. The result of this skin-to-juice ratio is wine of depth and structure with explosive fruit. The wild, black and red thorny vine fruit flavors course through the wine on the palate and in the nose. The signature Howell Mountain ground white pepper spice and thorny underbrush accents are omnipresent in the mid palate. In short, this wine is exquisite.
