A new wine (it's the first time I've tasted it, anyway) the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon The Stick checks in as a mix of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, all from the Candlestick Ridge Vineyard on Howell Mountain. It's similar to the Howell Mountain cuvée and has brilliant purity and elegance as well as textbook blue fruits, sappy herbs, pine forest, graphite, and violet-tinged aromas and flavors. Pure, balanced, and full-bodied on the palate, it's a head-turner and one rock-solid 2017."

“The Stick” is our homage to Candlestick Ridge Estate Vineyard, our mountain jewel that sits on Howell Mountain’s north summit at 2300′. The site is a short drive from our Winery Estate Vineyard, but produces fruit of such individual intensity and power, that we wanted to offer a wine that honored special vineyard site. This Bordeaux-inspired estate red is crafted of Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, and is held back an additional year in bottle to ensure that it is perfectly integrated upon on release.

CANDLESTICK RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARD, HOWELL MOUNTAIN
Just down the road, Candlestick Ridge is the northernmost vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA and is slightly warmer than the summit ridge where the Winery Estate vineyard lies. Candlestick is influenced by warm air from Pope Valley to the east and – at its slightly lower elevation – it is protected from the constant wind that hits the ridge line. The big subsurface boulders were removed during the replanting, leaving thin tufa soil on top of a rocky volcanic bedrock.

Our experimentation with the inaugural 2016 vintage of“The Stick” is paying off in spades, and the 2017 release is deep black, integrated and beautifully layered, free of harsh tannin despite its tremendous size and scope. Many 2017 wines were considered somewhat tight and close when released. With a few years of bottle age under their belt, they are proving to be wines of great class and depth, with fantastic aging potential.
