As May comes to a close each year, a flood of every conceivable type and style of Rosé appears in the marketplace, both online and in stores. There has never been a more diverse and vibrant selection available. Unfortunately, with the meteoric rise in popularity of Rosé over the last decade, there has — alas — been a corresponding rise in the bland, the sweet and the soulless. (Buyer beware!)

Thus we are thrilled that it's time to release our antidote to the dreaded saignée “drain-down”: the 2022 La Fleur Craig Rosé of Grenache. Crafted from fruit grown at 2300' on Howell Mountain, in Block 6 of Candlestick Ridge Vineyard, this is a decidedly Provence-style Grenache Rosé, which is lighter in color by definition. But that does not mean that it is light in intensity or structure. Harvested early and fermented in neutral French oak barrels after a kiss on the skins, this electric display of red thorny fruit berry, mineral and cigarette box will improve for some time in the bottle, but it is lovely right out of the gate if you just can't wait.

There’s no need to settle for “Hamptons water”; this summer, insist on an intentionally-made Rosé, reminicent of the great summer wines enjoyed in Provence. As always, only a handful of cases were made. If you want to add this gem to your summer table, do not delay.

CANDLESTICK RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARD, HOWELL MOUNTAIN
Just down the road, Candlestick Ridge is the northernmost vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA and is slightly warmer than the summit ridge where the Winery Estate vineyard lies. Candlestick is influenced by warm air from Pope Valley to the east and – at its slightly lower elevation – it is protected from the constant wind that hits the ridge line. The big subsurface boulders were removed during the replanting, leaving thin tufa soil on top of a rocky volcanic bedrock.
