Terroir, the French term for a sense of place that establishes a wine’s unique identity, is the perfect concept to describe the qualities of Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignons. At 2000’ along the summit of Spring Mountain, this property requires patience and attention to detail. Deep color and the intense perfume of dark mountain flowers are the signature of this wine each year. We are fortunate to obtain a tiny amount of this exquisite fruit to create a wine with great weight, structure and velvety texture. The 2019 bottling displays the mountain’s special blue notes — blueberry, boysenberry and exotic plum fruits — that are so distinctive to Cabernets grown on its slopes.

"I think Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media had it right with the 2019 vintage, the color and tannin that came pouring out of the fruit in such a monumental vintage needed some true attention to detail in the winery. So many of the wines that I’ve tasted lost their sense of place and nuance due to a failure to adjust protocols on the crush pad and in the barrel room. Our 2019 Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon from Joan Crowley’s small vineyard at 2000’ near the summit of Spring Mountain is a huge wine, but it is also balanced and velvety and loaded with the aspects that make those volcanic soils so desired for wine grape cultivation.

"The 2019 Spring Mountain Cabernet is our best effort to date (with the possible exception of the 2015) from this unique site. The wine was tight when I tasted with Antonio in late October, garnering a 94+ point score rather than the 96 or 97s of our other mountain offerings, but it is not a lesser wine. I chalk it up to one of those days. The wine is absolutely opaque with cassis, blue stone, lavender black flowers and lead pencil all emanating from the glass. This is such a distinct wine that it is hard to articulate how much I enjoy it. If you love great Spring Mountain District Cabernet, you’ve come to the right place."

CROWLEY VINEYARD, SPRING MOUNTAIN
The Crowley vineyard is a close fit for our mountain Cabernet portfolio from the highest elevations of Napa Valley. Overlooking St. Helena from its perch at 2,000 feet, this vineyard’s rocky volcanic soil, varied hillside exposures, and moderate climate produce densely concentrated wine grapes. The mountain is cooled by afternoon breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean, creating moderate daytime temperatures and cooler nights that allow grapes to ripen slowly without pushing high alcohol and sugars.

This 2019 Spring Mountain District Cabernet is defined by its size and overall gravitas. The wine is deeply colored, velvety on the palate (despite the high tannin count characteristic of the 2019 vintage) and set for a long life ahead. The beauty of this Cabernet is to be found in its piercing showcase of the volcanic soils in Joan Crowley’s small vineyard. Without doubt, 2019 is the best edition of our Spring Mountain bottling from 2005 to the present. That is to say, it is one of the highest quality red wines to be produced anywhere in the Napa Valley at any price.
