Each year during the blending sessions for our Howell Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, one lot stands out for its power, purity and vineyard expression, the merlot sourced from Block 3, a tiny portion of our 10 acre vineyard. In terms of its power, complexity and cellar worthiness, it is a Howell Mountain nod to the mother of all Merlot, Chateau Petrus.

About This Wine
Vineyard

2013 was a perfect vintage on Howell Mountain and the resulting merlot is dense, dark and supple. Classic cassis, wild bramble berry, crushed red rock and spice pour out of the nose and onto the palate. The finish is lingering and powerful. This is quite simply one of the finest Merlots produced in the Napa Valley. It is our pleasure to present it to a few of our very best.

Just 230 cases of our inaugural Merlot bottling were produced.

CANDLESTICK RIDGE VINEYARD
Situated on the north end of the Howell Mountain summit cap at 2,250’ of elevation, this 26-acre vineyard, first planted in 1950, rests on a plateau overlooking the southeast face of Mount St Helena and the whole of Pope Valley. Replanted by Duckhorn Winery in 1998 to primarily Bordeaux varieties on varying rootstocks, the Candlestick Vineyard produces wines that are dense, dark and explosive with flavor. The pure white volcanic ash and Tufa soils are poor and well drained leading to low yields and intensely flavored berries.
